Combining my fascinations with the colors of the
night and my experience of my hometown, this show
is intended to look at Huntsville in a totally new light.
There are many areas in which this show lets me do
things very differently.
One, though many of the paintings are quite dark it
has been possible to use almost pure color in much
of the painting process, making for paintings that
respond amazingly to illumination.
Two, because the night is a more alien visual
environment I am freer to use both the texture and
color of paint to create expressions of my
experience of seeing in the dark.
Three, Huntsville is really a
haven for artists, but the daily
experience of non-artists here
doesn't represent that well. It is
easier to affect how ordinary
citizens see their home town
when one presents them a new
way to see something they don't
really pay much attention to.
How it FEELS to see Huntsville
at night is one of those
mundane, but malleable, things.
The people of Huntsville should
see their home as a special
place.
Four, It's easy to say of a small
town, "Oh, there's not much to
see." Look through these
paintings and anyone who has
lived here for any length of time will
realize this show barely scratches
the surface. Granted these are
not all landmarks. There is not
one of Dan Phillips's wonderful
houses. There are few of our
recognized historic structures.
Here, though, is a small serving of
images from a place that teems
with visual life for those willing to
see with a seeking eye.
