Design for an elevator beanstalk

Elevator "Jack in the Beanstalk"  Mural pre sketch.

We love  elevator murals.  They provide the chance to play in ways no other art  form does.  This is because they are revealed only a piece at a time.  They are the painter's equivalent of writing a  play.  Most home elevators also allow a view on more than one side, which permits the view to shift from one wall to another as the car ascends or descends.

In this preliminary drawing I have gone to the second phase of development.  A pencil drawing has been transferred to tracing paper and colored in watercolor pencil. This second step is also sometimes done in actual paint as was the case with the dragons below.  This is done by scanning the pencil sketch and printing on drawing or pastel paper, then painting in the finish materials.  Recently I have also begun doing some of the finishing work on preliminaries on the computer itself.  This allows me to communicate directly with the client via e-mail.  In another development a new program is allowing us to show artworks as they will appear on the walls (I haven't gotten past the frustrations of learning all the ins and outs of doing this yet, though).  Didn't know art could be so technological, did you?

If you would like to see a more detailed version of this sketch just click on the picture.

Unfortunately my photos of the finished elevator mural were taken in poor lighting conditions and could not be used on this site.  Hopefully we can return with the digital camera and show you the results soon. Fiery Dragons warm a child's room

What sort of stuff can you have on your children's walls?

I have done everything from castles to dinosaurs to a glow-in-the-dark galaxy on the ceiling!  If you can dream it I can do it.  If you're afraid you can't dream it- I'll dream it and show you!

Think what one can see from here! Children are much more than the generation who will provide for us in old age. Within their minds the universe of the future is being born. Nothing we know in our world can be acted upon by a human being until some image of it has been constructed within a human mind. From the urge to speak to the realization of notions as seemingly esoteric as Einstein's understanding of space-time, nothing really is for the individual until they have conceived of it, until they have "created" it within their own heads. Children are constantly pursuing this process. Enriching their environment by helping them to see their ideas come to life encourages them to see their own significance. It also helps them to pursue their own creativity. I have done this in art residencies in schools and I encourage parents to do this in their homes. This page shows examples of murals I painted starting with the ideas of clients, some of them children.
