Samuel Walker Houston - Athens of Texas Mural, Set to be painted on the most
prominent exposed wall in downtown Huntsville with design cooperation by Richard
Haas, this mural is to celebrate the life of black East Texas educator Samuel
Walker Houston and his contribution to the educational heritage of
Huntsville.
Substantial second floor lobby painting for a hotel currently
being built in downtown Austin. Grand landscape to show an historic view of
Austin.
Special expertise in an emerging market
My recent work with
Alamo Heights United Methodist Church in San Antonio has demonstrated that the
development of new curricula in churches nationwide is creating a need for
artists and designers sensitive to the theological and historical foundations of
Christian churches, synagogues, and potentially, Mosques throughout the nation.
These new curricula provide opportunities to create themed environments in which
religious instruction can be enriched. This may create pressures to do the same
sort of thing in public funded schools as well.
Until November of 2003 I
was the Senior Artist at Party Props, Inc. in Houston. Most of my time was spent
designing and painting theatrical size backdrops for use in large events. This
is very creative work but it made little use of my knowledge and touched on few
of my interests.
Please take a look at my website at "http://www.muralist.cc" .
The first photo attached here is from a project I convinced my bosses at
Party Props to allow me to do in San Antonio. It was for a church which is
redesigning their Sunday School program around a "rotational model". In this
curriculum classes rotate from classroom to classroom, allowing each room to be
designed around a particular theme. In many of the other areas of the building I
took a special interest in illustrating something of the atmosphere of first
century Israel. Unfortunately I do not have access to photos of most of these
rooms at this time. The photo here is of a large utility room which has been
made into a computer center. I designed the cloister arch format to allow
landscapes to open up the room so it wouldn't feel so much like a closet. The
scene shown here is of Megiddo, the ancient Armageddon. Time made it impossible
for me to do all the faux work in the project, which included seven murals this
size or larger so I designed the faux work in such a way that it could be done
by amateurs.
The next photo is the Lon Morris College Millennium Mural
and, along with the series of web pages at the address below the photo, the
mural tells a brief version of the history of this tiny Methodist Junior
college. I designed and painted the mural and wrote the text in the
website."http://people.txucom.net/ljamison/LMC_1.html""http://people.txucom.net/ljamison/LMC_1.html"

Also on my website you can see work I have done for Scott
Johnson
Elementary School in Huntsville
memorializing the life work of the school's namesake and, through the link to
Party Props website, many of the more than forty backdrops (standard size 18
feet by 42 feet) I have painted for Party Props in the last two
years.
Additionally shown on the website ("Paintings") is the fine
art painting I did for more than a dozen years, during seven of which I was
represented by Altermann and Morris Galleries in Houston, Dallas, and Santa Fe.
