Growing up the kid of an artist was interesting to say the least. To this day I still introduce myself as "Lee Jamison's daughter. Not the singing one, the dancing one." I can use that line with almost anyone in Huntsville and they'll know who I'm talking about.
We all participated in some art form growing up, which I feel many children miss out on, and I doubt many kids have the opportunity to go to galleries and art openings either. I was often my dad's tag-along, enjoying the socialite role at grand openings. I felt downright fancy (and the adults got a kick out of it too).
We didn't have much money, but we made up for our lack of designer clothes and fancy vacations with nights spent singing show tunes while my mom played piano, dancing in recitals, and participating in just about every play put on within a 40 mile radius.
As a family we definitely had our ups and downs, but became even closer because of it, and are still incredibly close today. I can't say I wasn't envious of what other kids may have had that I didn't when I was younger, but looking back, I know that if my kids have the opportunity to experience half of what I did growing up, they'll have a pretty good childhood.
You really were "fancy", too! No one ever liked to dress up for an event more than you. I've always been so proud of my kids.
